Toller Cranston

“Toller Cranston is still larger than life”, wrote one Toronto columnist recently. How else do you describe someone who is an Olympic medalist, Member of the Order of Canada; internationally acclaimed athlete, author, illustrator, designer, painter and, at one time, one of Canada’s most outspoken and flamboyant artistes.

Hailed as the “Skater of the Century’ his innovative, dramatic and artistic style on ice not only forever revolutionized the sport of figure skating but caught the world’s attention and imagination. So to, do his vivid and exuberant canvases, the result of Toller’s lifelong passion for art and devotion to painting.

Today he concentrates exclusively on painting, often working 10 hours a day in his private studio in San Miguel. But, although delighting in his new home here, he does not look to Mexico for inspiration. “All my paintings are imaginary, steeped in history. I’m very influenced by the history of art.”
The results are ever changing, at times bold and dramatic, whimsical or unashamedly extravagant but always exploding with life and color. Ethereal Tsars and Tsarinas, mythical country sides, luscious still lifes; glimpses of the magical and mystical wrought with immaculate detail by one who admits, justifiably, to being an innovative leader who goes his own way.

Toller Cranston es aún más grande que la vida, escribió recientemente un columnista de Toronto. De qué otra forma describir a un medallista olímpico, Miembro de la Orden de Canadá, atleta, autor, ilustrador, diseñador, pintor aclamado internacionalmente, y al mismo tiempo, uno de los más elocuentes y sofisticados artistas de Canadá.

Vitoreado como el “el patinador del siglo,” su innovador, dramático y artístico estilo revolucionó para siempre el deporte de patinaje de figura, y que atrapó la atención y la imaginación del mundo. Lo mismo que para sus vívidas y exuberantes telas, resultado de la pasión de toda la vida de Toller por el arte y la devoción a la pintura.

Hoy se concentra exclusivamente en pintar, a menudo trabajando diez horas diarias en su studio privado en San Miguel. Pero, a pesar de disfrutar su nuevo hogar aquí, él no busca su inspiración en México. “Todas mis pinturas son imaginarias, profundamente históricas. Estoy muy influenciado por la historia del arte.” Los resultados siempre cambiantes, a veces audaces y dramáticos, caprichosos o extravagantemente desvergonzados, pero siempre explosivos en color. Zares y Zarinas etéreos, lugares místicos de la campiña, exquisitas naturalezas muertas, y el toque místico del detalle inmaculado, por quien admite, con justificación, ser un líder innovador que hace las cosas a su manera.
